Ohio State started the 1986 football season with high expectations – ranked ninth in the preseason AP poll. After back-to-back losses to open the season at a neutral site (Alabama) and on the road (Washington), the Buckeyes dropped out of the Top 25. It took a six-game winning streak for OSU to return to the rankings and they were riding a nine game winning streak and a No. 7 ranking when they hosted Michigan on Nov. 22. The Wolverines dashed the Buckeyes’ Rose Bowl hopes and sent them to the Cotton Bowl instead. The season ended on a positive note when OSU cruised to a Cotton Bowl win over 8th-ranked Texas A&M.
Ohio State scored a combined 319 points (24.5 ppg) and allowed 167 (12.8 ppg). They finished 2-3 against A.P. Top 25-ranked teams.
