Recap

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State opened its conference season with a 14-0 win over Illinois, stretching the win streak to three. It was the first Buckeye shutout in 27 games and the first whitewashing of a Big Ten foe since 1980.

All the scoring came in the second period. Jim Karsatos scored from ten yards out on an option play and tailback Vince Workman surprised the Illini secondary with a ten-yard pass to Everett Ross.

Once again, Ohio State’s defense dominated by holding the Illinois offense to just 253 yards, only 32 on the ground, only 32 on the ground.

Five Illinois turnovers and five penalties kept the Illini frustrated throughout the afternoon.

Chris Spielman, Sonny Gordon, Derek Isaman and Michael Kee were defensive standouts for Ohio State.
