SEATTLE, Wash. — For the first time since 1894, Ohio State lost its first two football games as Washington trounced the Buckeyes 40-7 on a rainy afternoon in Seattle.
The Huskies outgained Ohio State 408 yards to 186 in dealing Ohio State its worst defeat since 1967.
After a scoreless first quarter, Ohio State self-destructed in the second period when Washington scored 24 points, 14 coming in the final 1:13.
Forced to pass in the second half, Washington pressured Ohio State’s Jim Karsatos and kept the Buckeye attack in check.
A powerful Washington ground game paced by Rick Fenney and Vince Weathersby and pinpoint passing by quarterback Chris Chandler put constant pressure on a weary Buckeye defense.
Chris Spielman, with 22 tackles, was easily the top defender for Ohio State.
