John Cooper’s first season with Ohio State was a rocky one that resulted in a tie for seventh place in the Big Ten and no bowl appearance. OSU scored a combined 229 points (20.8 ppg) and allowed 283 (25.7 ppg). Ohio State did not win consecutive games all year. The highlight of 1988 was a wild home win against seventh-ranked LSU in Week 3. Unable to capitalize on that win, OSU went on to lose their next three games to open the Big Ten season.
