Recap

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Forcing eight West Virginia turnovers (six interceptions, two fumbles), the fifth-ranked Buckeyes opened the season with a 24-3 win over the Mountaineers (1-1). OSU jumped out quickly, posting a 17-0 advantage with 5:32 left to play in the first quarter, thanks in part to three WVU miscues.

Defense was the story of the day for both teams, with West Virginia gaining only 197 yards in total offense and Ohio State 213. OSU’s William White tied the single-game school record with three interceptions on the afternoon, including a 29-yard return for a touchdown. Linebacker Chris Spielman registered a game-high 19 tackles and had two interceptions for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State senior quarterback Tom Tupa made his first start a successful one, completing 12 of 25 attempts for 150 yards and a touchdown, a 23-yard strike to Everett Ross. A sluggish OSU offense accounted for just 63 net rushing yards.
