WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Buckeyes used the big play on offense and a fine defensive effort to carry them to a 42-2 victory over Purdue. Tailback Robert Smith scored on a 69-yard run on OSU’s first possession to make it 7-0. Following a Purdue safety and tight end Rich Huffman’s two-yard TD reception, quarterback Greg Frey and flanker Jeff Graham went to work. Frey made a 60-yard touchdown reception on Graham’s end-around pass, then Graham caught scoring strikes of 58 and 48 yards to make it 35-2 with a quarter-and-a-half left. The offense generated 475 total yards, while the defense held Purdue to four yards rushing and made five interceptions, two by cornerback Vinnie Clark.
