1992 Media Guide: Back after a year away from football … hopes to return to his form of 1990 when he rushed for an OSU freshman record of 1,126 yards and was the U.P.I. National Freshman of the Year … quit the team last August, citing a need to devote more time to his studies and questioning his own desire to play college football … converted to a track scholarship after he left football and competed on both the indoor and outdoor teams, specializing in the relays and longer sprints … re-joined the team in April but took part in just two spring practice sessions because of track conflicts … his return bolsters an already strong running back corps and also gives the Buckeyes a quality kickoff returner … excellent speed and a threat to go all the way anytime he touches the ball … a fine pass receiver.

1991: Did not play.

1991 Media Guide: Coming off a brilliant freshman year in which he was chosen the National Freshman of the Year by United Press International and was a unanimous choice as Big Ten Freshman of the Year … started the last ten games and led Ohio State in rushing with a single-season OSU freshman record of 1,126 yards (the old record of 867 was set in 1972 by Archie Griffin) … led the Big Ten in yards per carry with a 6.4 average … topped the 100-yard mark five times, with a season-best 172 at Wisconsin … also rushed for a team-best 8 touchdowns … had 10 receptions for 112 yards and is a fine receiver … averaged 21.8 yards per kick return … second in the Big Ten in all-purpose yardage with an average of 135.6 yards per game … the Buckeyes’ fastest back and a threat to go all the way anytime he touches the ball … very intelligent player who quickly mastered Ohio State’s complicated offense … could also return punts this year … wore No. 32 last year, but switched to his old high school number (26) in the spring.

1990 Media Guide: Considered one of the top running back prospects in the nation last year … Ohio’s Mr. Football each of the past two seasons and a consensus All-American last year … rushed for more than 2,300 yards and scored 34 touchdowns as a senior … explosive runner who can run inside or out … finished his prep career with 5,038 yards and 68 touchdowns rushing … Euclid’s three-year record was 29-5 with Smith as a starter … versatile back, who can catch and also return kicks … started one game at quarterback his senior year … won the state 100-meter dash as a junior and was second as a senior … an excellent student whose long-range goal is medicine … hobbies include listening to a wide range of music from rock to classical.
