Recap
Columbus, OH — In a game Ohio State fans have been waiting for since 1935, the Buckeyes gained a measure of revenge for the well-chronicled 18-13 loss to Notre Dame nearly 60 years earlier. And while the 1935 contest was later labeled by the media as the greatest college football game in the first half of the 20th century, this game will go down in history as one of the greatest wins in Ohio State football lore. A record crowd of 95,537 jammed Ohio Stadium to see the much anticipated showdown, just the third meeting ever between the two giants. OSU started sluggishly and trailed 20-14 with five minutes to play in the third period, but the Buckeyes erupted for three touchdowns in the next five minutes (all three scores following ND turnovers) to take a 35-20 lead. The second of those TDs was a spectacular 82-yard catch-and-run by flanker Terry Glenn. Notre Dame scored its final TD of the day with 12:55 to go on a 13-yard run by Randy Kinder and trailed 35-26 after the try for two failed. But any hopes of a rally were quickly dashed by tailback Eddie George, who bolted 61 yards on the next play from scrimmage to set up yet another OSU touchdown. Three plays later, George scored that TD and the decibel level in Ohio Stadium reached an all-time high. George finished with 207 yards rushing (his second 200-yard game of the year and the fourth of his career), while Bobby Hoying threw four TD passes (giving him nine in two games), including two to Glenn (six in two games). Big plays were numerous, including Dimitrious Stanley’s 17-yard TD reception just before the half that narrowed the Notre Dame lead to 17-14, and Mike Vrabel’s hit at the OSU two-yard line that forced Notre Dame to settle for a field goal on its first possession of the second half. For 18 living members of the 1935 Ohio State team who were in attendance, it was a day worth waiting for.
