MADISON, Wis — Quarterback Art Schlichter ran for two touchdowns after a pair of Wisconsin turnovers and fullback Tim Spencer raced 50 yards for another score, leading 10th-ranked Ohio State to a 21-0 Big Ten college football victory.
Ohio State, 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten, took a 14-0 lead by scoring two touchdowns in a one-minute, 25-second span late in the first quarter and early in the second.
Cornerback Vince Skillings made a diving interception of an underthrown pass by Wisconsin’s John Josten at the Badger 40. A Schlichter to Calvin Murray screen pass gained 27 yards to the Wisconsin 10. Schlichter scored on a rollout to the left from the 6.
Wisconsin’s Marvin Neal bobbled the ensuing kickoff and was downed at his own 1-yard line. John Williams fumbled on the next play and Marcus Marek recovered for the Buckeyes on the Wisconsin 2.
Schlichter scored from the three as the Buckeyes led 14-0 with 13:37 left in the first half.
Spencer broke over the middle and outraced safety Jerry Vance on his 50-yard touchdown run to boost Ohio State’s lead to 21-0 with 7:39 in the first half.
Wisconsin, 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the Big Ten, drove to the Ohio State 13 late in the fourth quarter, but tailback Troy King was tackled for a four-yard loss on the fourth down with 6:05 to play.
Wisconsin’s only other scoring threat saw Wendell Gladem come up short on a 52-yard field goal attempt on the last play of the first half.
Ohio State, which entered the game leading the Big Ten and total offense, was contained most of the way by a Wisconsin defensive charge led by noseguard Tim Krumrie, tackles Mike Harrington and Tom Houston, and end Dave Ahrens. However, the Badgers stopped themselves on offense with a pair of pass interceptions and two lost fumbles.
Vlade Janakievski, who had kicked 10 field goals in 11 attempts previously this season, was wide to the right on all three of his attempts against Wisconsin.
The Buckeyes were forced to punt from their own 44 on the game’s first series, but Vance fumbled Tom Orasz’ punt and Keith Ferguson recovered for the Buckeyes at the Wisconsin 20.
But after Schlichter’s third down pass intended for Gary Williams at the Wisconsin 10 was broken up by Ross Anderson, Janakievski missed a 32-yard field goal attempt.
Janakievski missed a 35-yard attempt with 1:34 left in the first half after an Ohio Slate drive stalled at the Wisconsin 17.
Wisconsin, aided by two personal foul penalties against Ohio State and sparked by a 20-yard pass from freshman Jess Cole to Tim Stracka, drove to the Buckeye 35. However, Gladem missed his 52-yard field goal try.
