Weight: 185 (2004-05)
2005 Media Guide: Made a name for himself last year with the special teams and lettered as a true freshman … hopes to establish himself in the secondary this year … has excellent speed and is a jarring hitter … probably most at home at safety, but wouldn’t be out of sorts at cornerback, ala Dustin Fox who came to Ohio State as a safety in 2001, but then started at corner for the next three years … one of those players who will find a way to get on the field and make a contribution.
2004: Played in all 12 games and finished his rookie season with 15 tackles, tops on the special teams … had 10 solos and five assists … three tackles against Iowa and Purdue were his top efforts … also had two stops (both solos) against Indiana … forced a fumble as a member of the punt coverage unit at North Carolina State, a miscue that resulted in a 6-0 Ohio State lead in a game eventually won 22-14 by the Buckeyes.
2004 Media Guide: Fine all-around athlete who loves to hit and play run support … could conceivably figure in with the special teams this year while vying for a spot in the rotation at safety … has a couple of talented players ahead of him in returnees Nate Salley and Brandon Mitchell and should benefit greatly from understudying those two standouts … has explosive closing speed and good ball skills … knows where the ball is (eight interceptions for 182 yards last year).
High School: Won All-Ohio honors as a senior, helping Beechcroft to a 9-3 record and a berth in the state playoffs … listed as the state’s 11th-best prospect by The Ohio Football Recruiting News … had six interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns, and 50 tackles as a junior, winning all-city honors … listed by Rivals.com as the 17th-best safety prospect in the nation … SuperPrep listed him as the 30th-best player in the Midwest … seventh-best safety prospect by TheInsiders.com … has 4.4 speed … also played basketball and averaged 16.0 points per game at guard … would like to play basketball for the Buckeyes.
Personal: Is the son of Raymond Smith and Lori Welch.
