Major: English (2001-02), Undeclared (1999-00)

Weight: 220 (2000-02), 195 (1999)

2002 Media Guide: Cie Grant moves back to linebacker this year after a season as a starting cornerback … has size and speed and is being counted on to help fill the void created by the departure of Joe Cooper and Courtland Bullard … physical player who is much more at home at linebacker, but who offered to help out at corner in 2001 when the Buckeyes were looking for a starter … his speed at linebacker will allow the Buckeyes to stay in their “base” defense a little longer and not go to the nickel package quite as quickly … that speed should also make him effective on the blitz … consistently put up good numbers in the spring.

2001 Season: One of the more intriguing stories of the year … emerged from spring practice as a solid backup at linebacker, but surprised the coaching staff in the fall by asking to move to cornerback, a position he had never played … given the opportunity, he worked his way into the two-deep and started 10 of the 12 games … finished the year as the Buckeyes fourth-leading tackler with 56 stops … also had five passes broken up and a three interceptions (Penn State, Purdue and South Carolina) … had a career-high nine tackles against Northwestern and eight at Penn State … scooped up a fumble at UCLA and returned it 32 yards … suffered a mild concussion at Minnesota, but was back in the lineup the following week.

2001 Media Guide: Cie Grant is a relatively unsung player who made a favorable impression on the coaching staff during the spring … a converted safety with outstanding speed … is still learning the position, but has shown a penchant for getting to the ball carrier and making plays … one of the Buckeyes’ fastest linebackers and has the ability to close quickly … saw his first extended playing time last year and was in on 13 tackles, including 10 solos … could play a much more prominent role in 2001 … also a fine special teams player.

2000 Season: Was shifted from safety to linebacker in the spring of 2000 … did not play in the first two games, but did see action in the last 10 … four tackles at Iowa was his top effort … also excelled with the special teams.

2000 Media Guide: Cie Grant makes the switch to linebacker this year after spending two seasons – one as a redshirt – at strong safety. He is an athletic playmaker that is making the transition from the high school to collegiate level and is constantly improving. Grant shined on special teams last year with his speed and tackling ability and will be counted on as a solid performer in that area again this season.

1999 Season: Played in all 12 games, mainly on special teams … had six tackles, all of the solo variety … logged 28 total minutes, including a season-high five minutes against Ohio.

1999 Media Guide: Cie Grant, who redshirted the 1998 season as a true freshman, is working hard at picking up the responsibilities at strong safety. “Cie is making that transition from high school to major college defensive back,” secondary coach Jon Tenuta said. “He is a hard tackler and he showed much improvement this spring.”

1998 Season: Redshirted.

High School: An all-around performer at New Philadelphia, playing quarterback, receiver and defensive back and starting on both offense and defense. All-Ohio pick had 2,357 career rushing yards and 25 touchdowns and 171 career tackles. A four-year track letterman who took third in the state 400 meters as a junior. The son of Jeanette and Willie Grant. Born Nov. 27, 1979.
