2019: Linebackers Coach

2019 Media Guide: Columbus, Ohio native Al Washington, who played on and coached on Boston College teams that included Ryan Day on staff and who has significant ties to the Buckeye football program, joined the Ohio State coaching staff Jan. 8 as linebackers coach.

Washington grew up in and around Ohio Stadium and attended Bishop Watterson High School, graduating in 2002. His father, Al Washington Sr., played linebacker for the Buckeyes from 1977 through 1980 and currently ranks eighth in career tackles with 345.

Washington has spent the majority of his coaching career on defense, but from 2013-15 he coached running backs at Boston College. Boston College ranked first in the ACC with 211.8 yards per game in that span. The Eagles improved their rushing output in each season and broke the school’s season rushing record in 2014. Washington and Day were on the same staff together at Boston College in 2013.

Washington coached linebackers at Michigan in 2018, helping the Wolverines produce the nation’s No. 3-ranked overall defense and the second-ranked unit against the pass. All three of his linebackers earned all-Big Ten honors: Devin Bush was the league’s defensive player and linebacker of the year; Khaleke Hudson and Josh Uche each were named honorable mention all-league.
