Post-OSU Update: Rich Spangler had tryouts with several NFL teams after his collegiate career at Ohio State, but did not make any of the teams. Spangler had a long career with moving and transportation logistics companies. He has two daughters with his wife, Tracy, whom he married in college. (updated: Feb. 2024)

1984: After a mild, midseason slump, became one of college football’s top placekickers in 1984 with 45 of 47 conversions and 14 of 19 field goals … a 52-yarder in Pasadena was the longest in the history of the Rose Bowl and his career long.

1983: Made 53 of 54 extra points … the 53 conversions is an Ohio State season record … made 41 straight before missing in the Northwestern game.

1982: Kicked 41 of 44 extra points … 47-yard field goals against Purdue and BYU are his longest makes to date (1984) … hit 9 of 18 field goal attempts … made three of five field goals in the 40 to 49-yard range.

High School: Was a placekicker and quarterback at Geneva High … made 54 of 60 extra points and 15 of 25 field goals over a three-year period … his kicking accuracy accounted for five of his team’s nine wins as a sophomore … longest field goal was 51 yards … was a defensive back as a sophomore and quarterback as a junior and senior … captained his Geneva High football, basketball and baseball teams as a senior.
